Tsukuba: Muslims about their experiences of Ramadan in Japan

News - Life in Japan

Source: JT Online logo
Fatma HachaniStudent, 30(Tunisian)Ramadan is the hardest month for me to be away from my family and country. I spend weekdays working in the lab. From 2 p.m. I start to feel tired. Not eating is not a major problem for me, but not drinking in such an exceptionally hot summer is a challenge! I realize that water is a great blessing and should be consumed responsibly. I'm experiencing the suffering of people living in countries with insufficient drinking water. And this is one of the greatest messages of Ramadan: patience and humility.
Ayman AtiaStudent, 32(Egyptian)Ramadan in Japan is
unique. I feel that I'm different from everyone around me, and my friends always think I'm a fool because "not eating and drinking is so hard, man." But I think spending Ramadan here makes me focus more on the meaning of it: training my soul to control my desires. I also enjoy the prayer gatherings every night and meeting many people from different cultures. In our countries we just pray and return home, but in Japan we have discussions and try to help each other out.

Fingerprint all Japanese, for safety's sake

If you're a noncitizen and have entered or re-entered Japan in the last couple of years, you've undoubtedly been invited to participate in the wonderful, fun-filled world of biometrics. It's safe to say that many of you felt as though you were being treated like criminals — not to mention the humiliation of being discriminated against, knowing that your Japanese companions could quickly walk through immigration without having to endure the same indignities.
Worse still is the fact that the foreign community of Japan worked so long and hard to finally get fingerprinting abolished — only to see
it reinstated just a few years later due to pressure from the U.S. government. And, let's not forget the frosting that gives this cake its real zest: the added discomfort of knowing our fingerprints will be kept in a database indefinitely.

How Japan embraced the advent of cinema

News - Life in Japan

Source: JT Online logo
Japanese cinema was different from the very start. In the days of the silent movie, recitators called benshi, took it upon themselves not only to interpret the action, but to add their own vocal and acting embellishments as self-appointed supra-dramatists.
There were other localized touches. During funeral scenes, for example, it was not uncommon for a member of staff to move stealthily through the darkened emporium lighting sticks of incense as mood enhancers.

Anyone for tennis?

News - Life in Japan

Source: JT Online logo
If you've ever had a tennis lesson, your coach likely told you to block, rather than swing at your volleys. That knowledge makes it all the more thrilling to watch someone like the athletic 16-year-old Sanae Ota rush in from the back of the court, leap up to a high, floating ball — before it bounces — and smack it back over the net with a full-strength forehand swing.
The stunning, if unconventional, winning shot (which almost knocks the racket from her opponent's hand) prompts the crowd to jump to its feet and roar — and Ota and
her doubles partner, Miyuki Hatsukawa, to high-five each other mid-court. Passersby pause outside the court to see what is going on. For a moment, the din of celebration (even though this is still the second set of three, and Ota and Hatsukawa are actually in trouble after losing the first) drowns out all other sounds — including the guitar-playing Christian missionaries across the road. Then the crowd quietens, and all that can be heard is the wind blowing through the giant cedar trees nearby — and those Christians' strummings. Next comes the bounce of the tennis ball, as Ota prepares...(Read whole news on source site)

Tightened credit rules threaten to spawn 'loan refugees'

Japan may be in the midst of a silent epidemic of kinketsu-byo ("lack of money disease"). The source of the infection is a new statute that bans many borrowers from obtaining unsecured loans.
While the full repercussions of the revised Money Lending Business Law (MLBL), which was passed in 2006 but went into force on June 18, are still unclear, the law's impact appears likely to affect discretionary spending by hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people who are no longer eligible to borrow. It is feared that many, desperate for a short-term infusion of cash, will
turn to illegal loan sharks.

Racy pop distracts from lip service

News - Life in Japan

Source: JT Online logo
In April, China's Culture Ministry fined two young women 50,000 yuan (¥625,000) each for lip-syncing during performances in the city of Chengdu last year. The authorities characterize this edict against "fake singing" as a kind of truth-in-advertising rule, but most people think it was an overreaction to the negative publicity the government received when it admitted that a 9-year-old girl lip-synced a song during the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics. That girl had replaced another who was a much better singer but was considered unphotogenic.
The Olympic organizers were being criticized for something that professional entertainers
do frequently. Though international stars such as Britney Spears and Janet Jackson have been slammed for lip-syncing on stage, it's understood to be a widespread phenomenon, and understandable given the huge production costs for major pop-music shows, which are expected to be perfect.

Outdated skin flick sequel begs money for old rope

News - Life in Japan

Source: JT Online logo
Author/director Oniroku Dan's "Hana to Hebi (Flower & Snake)" is the recognized classic of sadomasochistic literature in Japan, probably equal in reputation to Pauline Reage's "Story of O." While the novel has been brought to the big screen in many guises — and to the small as well, in an pervy video game by erotic-games studio elf — it was the 1974 "Hana to Hebi" that first saw Nikkatsu studio's roman poruno (big-budget adult movies) series move profitably into sadomasochism, and made its lead actress — Naomi Tani, the queen of sub sensuality — an Asian Bettie Page for the
'70s.
Of course, that was then, this is now. Much of the charm of the old roman poruno films lies in their retro-chic appeal, which leaves would-be remakers grasping for an angle. 2004 saw a retread of "Hana to Hebi" that proved it is still possible, even in the age of the Internet, to make a cinematic splash with a moderately-budgeted, well-shot softcore porn spectacle.

In the absence of information comes greater imagination

News - Life in Japan

Source: JT Online logo
The 1990s saw the rise of what at the time seemed an important generation of Japanese female photographers. This included Junko Takahashi, HIROMIX, Rika Noguchi, Mika Ninagawa and Tomoko Sawada. While much of this new wave — most notably the narcissistic soft-porn of HIROMIX and the cosplay outings of Tomoko Sawada — clearly had a limited shelf life, this photographic breakthrough for women also included some stronger talents, such as Mika Ninagawa, whose lush, sensual color photography soon found its way into glossy magazines and advertising, and Rika Noguchi, whose blurry minimalism didn't.
Perhaps the most interesting photographer
of this generation, however, is the one that got away and made a name for herself overseas. In 1993, after some success and recognition in Japan, Yuki Onodera, then 31, decided that living abroad would be the best inspiration and accordingly set up shop in Paris.

Lust, power, death and deception — welcome to paradise

News - Life in Japan

Source: JT Online logo
It's a common fantasy — being the only guy on an island of beautiful women. But to be the only woman on an island of men, including the good, the bad and the ugly? Somewhat different, isn't it?
That is the situation in which Okinawan Kazuko Higa found herself toward the end of World War II, when she was stranded together with nearly 30 Japanese men on the island of Anatahan in the Marianas group. The war ended, but the men refused to admit defeat — and continued to live a primitive life on the island. Higa deftly
transferred her affections from suitor to suitor, while several died competing for her favors.

Klaxons

Klaxons divide opinion like few others. Emerging in 2006 to a crescendo of hype, they were held up as leaders of the nu-rave movement even before their debut album "Myths of the Near Future" was busy thrilling and irritating in equal measure.
It led to much debate. The two opposing camps argued whether Klaxons were the pivot for an exciting new world or the worst of a bad bunch annoyingly smattered in Day-Glo, and whether their references to the cosmic and poet J.D Bullard were genuine or the worst type of in-joke. Even their gigs where heralded alternatively
as era-defining moments or derided as noisy confusion where each member seemed to be playing a different song at a different speed.

Orchestra taps dancer Kumagai for cross-genre concert

News - Life in Japan

Source: JT Online logo
Thirty-three-year-old Kazunori Kumagai started tap dancing when he was 15. Four years later, he went by himself to New York to attend special training for a role in "Noise/Funk," a Broadway show that traced black history in the United States through tap, hip-hop and funk rhythms. His Broadway dream was thwarted by visa issues, but that didn't stop him from getting experience on a different stage — the clubs, lounges, streets and subways of the city.
It wasn't long before Kumagai was attracting serious attention for his artistry, with weekly newspaper The Village Voice dubbing him Japan's
Gregory Hines (referring to the U.S. dancing legend) and Dance Magazine naming him one of "25 to Watch" in 2006, saying, "Tapper Kazunori Kumagai dances like the American Abstract Expressionist Jackson Pollock painted."

Buddhist priest Shinno Yamasoba

News - Life in Japan

Source: JT Online logo
Shinno Yamasoba, 58, is the vice head priest at Daijyoji Temple in Hyogo Prefecture's Kami town. Founded in 745, Daijyoji is nestled between peaceful rice fields and sheltered by layers of mountains. The closest city is Kyoto, about three hours away by local train. Still, visitors often make the journey to Daijyoji to see its exquisite Buddhist paintings, 165 of which are designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The main temple was built at the end of the 18th century as a collaboration between Mitsuzo (1716-1786), the head priest of Daijyoji, local carpenters and one of Japan's greatest painters Maruyama
Ohkyo (1733-1795). Designed to be harmonious with the surrounding gardens and mountains, the temple's walls are made of fusuma sliding doors, painted on both sides with birds, monkeys, trees and flowers. Depending on which of the 165 sliding doors are opened or closed, the rooms and interconnecting spaces offer different views that metamorphose from naturally beautiful to breathtaking. An almost endless number of views can be revealed. Recently, however, this picture of pure harmony has been disrupted, breaking the heart of priest Yamasoba. To protect Ohkyo's 45 masterpieces, they have been stored in a concrete warehouse next door and, using...(Read whole news on source site)

'<I>Ii</I>' is a perfectly good way to say, 'No, thank you'

News - Life in Japan

Source: JT Online logo
When I was in elementary school, a certain comma was the bane of my existence. No, not the serial comma. I learned (and later unlearned) that one relatively easily. It wasn't the comma before "too," either. Nor was it the one between multiple adjectives modifying a single noun. No, it was the comma in "no, thank you." The role that comma plays, the way set phrases are spoken and understood, and the disconnect caused by a phrase of refusal that incorporates a word of affirmation and acceptance is mirrored in the Japanese word ii (良い, いい) and its polite alternatives,
yoroshii (宜しい, よろしい) and kekkō (結構, けっこう).
Perhaps I was uncomfortable with "no, thank you" because the phrase sounds more like "nothankyou." We utter set phrases so often and so quickly they seem to merge into a single word — such as "thanksalot" and "howzitgoin." This is especially true for "nothankyou," since we attach it to the end of a conversation in order to exit a situation — for example, to leave a convenience store or supermarket unburdened by a receipt. We shouldn't feel bad, though. This is, after all, the goal of set phrases: We use them...(Read whole news on source site)

What matters is that Japan's 42-year run as the world's No. 2 is over, and if there's anything Japan takes seriously it's its position in the eyes of the world.
And the world is taking notice. Japan has become the prime example of what happens when a mature economy continues to stagnate. Scholar Alexandra Harney analyzed recent Japanese news stories in the online

They loved it, and word-of-mouth eventually made him one of Japan's most popular standup acts.
This week, the first installment of NHK's four-part "Family History" (NHK-G, Mon., 10 p.m.) looks at Ayanokoji's upbringing as a means of understanding the man. He was born and raised in a rural part of Kanagawa Prefecture, where
his father carried out insemination of dray horses. Though the family was poor, poverty was not as serious a problem as it might have been owing to his father's gentle nature, developed out of his deep love for horses. It wasn't until after his father died 13 years ago that Ayanokoji learned the tragic truth of his father's own past.

The 1965 treaty normalizing relations between South Korea and Japan is often invoked by the Japanese government as evidence it has not neglected this shared past. It also points to the $800 million in loans and aid it provided then as a concrete gesture of contrition. Tokyo cites the 1965 agreement to fend off individual claims for reparations, arguing that the South Korean government was obliged to distribute a portion of the settlement to individuals and that further claims were waived.

Way up North

News - Life in Japan

Source: JT Online logo
If you're trying to get to Sarufutsu in a hurry, the best way is to fly into Wakkanai, a blustery little fishing town on the extreme northern tip of Japan's northern island of Hokkaido, then rent a car or take the bus east. From Tokyo the whole trip takes just over three hours.
But if you are in a hurry, you probably shouldn't be headed to Sarufutsu in the first place — and if you're not watching the clock, there's a slower, better way to go.

"The Malacca Conspiracy" stands out as one of the most disturbing examples yet to appear.

The following is a chronology of the key points in modern Korean-Japanese history.
1873: Japanese military and political leader Takamori Saigo calls for invasion of Korean Peninsula due to Korea's refusal to recognize the Emperor Meiji's legitimacy and its claimed insulting treatment of Japanese envoys. His political rival Toshimichi Okubo thwarted those plans, arguing that such an invasion would be premature.

At 5 a.m., while friends and family slept, I strapped a kayak to the roof of the car and drove several minutes to Eagle Lake. With mist rising off the water and the sky beginning to turn steel gray, I paddled the boat out to a point where I could watch the sun rise between two of the island's low granite hills.

You've probably heard that Japanese people are shy to speak English because they are afraid of making mistakes. Every night before I go to bed, I pray that this English language phobia will spill over into English writing. As one visitor to Japan said to me, "You could spend your life correcting all the poor English on signs and menus in this country."
Why is it that the Japanese, who are so shy to speak even good English, are so bold to abuse the written language? Especially when it comes to using permanent mediums such as signboards that
broadcast errors to hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people. On signs and menus, no one seems to care if things are misspelled or incomprehensible. That's your problem!

There's no greater sign of the creative bankruptcy in Hollywood these days than the fact that pretty much any old TV series, no matter how stale or silly, is ripe for a remake. In fact, I'd be hard-pressed to think of a TV series from my youth that hasn't been remade.
"Charlie's Angels," "S.W.A.T.," "Starsky & Hutch," "The Dukes of Hazzard," "The Brady Bunch," "Scooby Doo," "Bewitched," "Lost In Space" . . . the list goes on and on, and good luck finding one that wasn't a big steaming pile of bad. The only thing that's amazing is
they have yet to tackle that "Moby Dick" of perpetual re-runs, "Gilligan's Island." Oh, wait: Warner Bros. has that in production. (And I'll give you even odds that Hugh Grant is cast as The Professor, 3:1 on Jay Baruchel as Gilligan, and 10:1 that it's going to suck Twizzlers.)

The castaway on a deserted tropical isle has inspired everything from "Robinson Crusoe" to innumerable New Yorker cartoons — but it was no joke to Kazuko Higa, the young wife of an assistant plantation overseer living on the small Pacific island of Anatahan in the closing days of World War II.
About 30 Japanese soldiers landed on Anatahan after their ship, sailing from Saipan to escape the advancing Americans, was bombed and sunk. When Japan surrendered, they refused to accept defeat and scraped out a bare existence on the island.

In search of society's true affluence

News - Life in Japan

Source: JT Online logo
"When I was 40, my father died. When he died, he was working on a project for a children's campground on the island of Naoshima. When I returned from Tokyo to Okayama to lead the family company, I inherited the project. As I lived and worked with the locals, my thinking went through a 180-degree reversal. I realized that my life in Tokyo, which seemed so full, had in fact been impoverished, and everything that was meaningful was right here in the Inland Sea."
These words were spoken on Hiroshima Day by Soichiro Fukutake, billionaire president of
the Benesse Corporation and the general producer of the Setouchi International Art Festival 2010, as he opened the Setouchi International Symposium 2010, a companion event to the festival. This three-day gathering of 40 local and international speakers explored the question "What is true affluence in our society?" and considered ways to revitalize the island's communities in a sustainable and authentic way.

Mao's dancer makes great jete forward in U.S.

News - Life in Japan

Source: JT Online logo
Some say that art thrives best in the face of adversity and "Mao's Last Dancer" is certainly proof of this. Based on the life and breathtaking ballet skills of Li Cunxin, who honed his art under the red flag of China's Cultural Revolution, "Mao's Last Dancer" could be a lesson in perseverance and keeping the flame alive, whatever the circumstances. In fact, seen in a certain light it has the tone and patina of a communist youth handbook; an intriguing facet of a film that was tailor-made in Hollywood.
Directed by Bruce Beresford ("Driving Miss Daisy" "Black Robe"),
"Mao's" zigzags from Li's childhood in a village in rural Shangdong Province in the early 1970s, to his exchange student days in Texas where he pirouetted his way to success under the tutelage of Houston Ballet Company director Ben Stevenson (Bruce Greenwood). The rags-to-riches process is rather over the top, but perhaps Beresford hoped that the depictions of political oppression and the scene of a near-kidnapping of Li (it's a classic Cold War moment) by communist officials trying to drag him back to the other side of the Bamboo Curtain, would have enough impact to obliterate the cliches. While that's...(Read whole news on source site)
